HOULTON, Maine — A 13-year-old Houlton girl was found Thursday after her family reported Wednesday that she was missing.
The girl was first reported missing at around 7:32 p.m. on Jan.20, according to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
The girl later was seen in Presque Isle with Sabastian Nieves, 22, of Fort Fairfield, according to Sheriff Shawn Gillen. Nieves is on probation for an aggravated assault conviction.
The sheriff’s office later tracked down the two to Nieves’ residence in Madawaska. Nieves was taken into custody and the girl was found walking down the street in the vicinity of the residence. The girl was returned to her family.
Gillen said that while police had a good idea of the girl’s whereabouts earlier, they had been focusing on taking Nieves into custody first before officially retrieving her. Nieves was arrested and charged with criminal restraint and violation of probation and transported to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
In August 2018, Nieves was indicted by a grand jury on charges of aggravated assault and domestic violence, and was later indicted on a charge of violation of the conditions of release. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison with all but six months suspended, and two years probation.
