HOULTON, Maine — The Maine Department of Transportation began the second of a two-year paving project along I-95 in northern Maine officially on Monday.

Paving will occur on the northbound side of Interstate 95 over a 13-mile stretch of highway,  beginning just north of T2 R9 Wels (located at the base of Baxter State Park) and ending at the Herseytown Township line in Stacyville.

The segments of the interstate to be paved include highway bridges and ramps. Areas around the highway’s interchange in Sherman are also scheduled to be cleared of trees in order to reduce the risk of vehicles hitting deer.

The work is scheduled to last until the end of July, and traffic will be reduced to a single lane in work areas, including overnight lane closures. The contract for the project was awarded by the Maine DOT to Northeast Paving in Hampden, with a contract amount of $9.1 million.
