OAKFIELD, Maine — Firefighters from multiple departments were sent to Oakfield on Thursday, June 22, for a structure fire Thursday morning at 350 Oakfield-Smyrna Road which left three pets dead.

The house, which belongs to Marty and Janet Rockwell of Oakfield, was fully engulfed in flames shortly after 10 a.m. The house was a total loss.

According to Oakfield Assistant Fire Chief Alex White, the fire is believed to have originated from a gas dryer explosion. While no people were harmed, two dogs and a cat died from the fire, according to White.

Fire departments from Oakfield, Houlton, Stacyville, Patten and Island Falls were on the scene to help extinguish the blaze.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support the Rockwell family as they recover from the fire’s aftermath.
