Police seek driver of crashed tow truck in Mapleton

MAPLETON, Maine — Maine State Police are seeking the public’s help in locating the driver of an International tow truck who fled the scene after crashing on Route 163 early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 1 a.m., State Police received a report of the motor vehicle crash and upon investigating discerned that an International flatbed wrecker was hauling a 2007 GMC pickup West on Route 163 when the wrecker left the roadway, struck an embankment and came to rest in the ditch.

The GMC pickup rolled off the flatbed and into the roadway, landing on its side and blocking both lanes of traffic.

The cab and engine compartment of the wrecker were burned completely. Neither of the vehicles had registration plates.

The driver of the wrecker fled the scene and was likely injured, according to Sgt. Josh Haines of the Maine State Police. Anyone with information about this crash is encouraged to call investigating trooper Steven Mahon at 207-532-5400.
