75 Years Ago –   August 15, 1946

Easton woman head of Ray Goding Post Aux. — Mrs. Charles Adams of Easton, was installed as president of Ray Goding Unit, No. 88, Aug. 7, by Mrs. Yvonne Baker of Madawaska, vice president of the 7th district, following a banquet at the Northeastland Hotel.

Table decorations in blue and gold, Auxiliary colors, were effectively arranged by Mrs. G. Irving Brown and Mrs. William Milliken.

Lt. Col. Putnam appointed USO County Chairman — Lt. Col. George Putnam, of Fort Fairfield, was appointed Aroostook County Campaign Chairman, for the USO Campaign. Aroostook County Campaign was held by a man who had both military and civilian organization experience. Col. Putnam was a veteran of both world wars and had had a wide knowledge of the problems and welfare needs of servicemen. He worked at the Presque Isle Air Base as well. “The USO Campaign for 1947 had been brought on by the continued need for service to the more than one million men and women who were still in the armed forces”. 

50 Years Ago –  August 18, 1971

Maine Potato Growers recognized employees — Maine Potato Growers, Inc. presented service awards to seventeen employees during an employee buffet supper. Receiving awards were: Five-year award to Mike Beaulieu, Eric Sutherland, Darlene Chapman from Maine Bag in Caribou; Tony Robichaud, Shirley Howlett, Bill Akeley, Ryan Umphrey, Todd Duncan, Greg Hallett of Presque Isle. Ten-year award to Sandy Chapman of Maine Bag; Roger Seeley and Bruce Walton of  Presque Isle. Fifteen year award to Louis Milton of Presque Isle. Twenty-five-year award to Ira Dodge and Frank “Sam” Mahan of Presque Isle. Forty-year award to Gerald McGann and Mack Bragdon of Maine Bag in Caribou.

Three Presque Isle players earned tennis titles — Sixty-eight Aroostook County youth braved the rain to complete play in the Aroostook County annual singles tennis tournament. Six individual recreation departments were entered in the tourney, including Mapleton, Fort Kent, Madawaska, Caribou and Presque Isle. The winner of the 10-12 boys division was Josh Cyr of Caribou and winner of the 10-12 year-old girls category was Whitney Sirois of Presque Isle. Ben Bouchard of Madawaska demonstrated consistency and stamina in defeating Adam Thibodeau of Caribou to clinch the 13-15 year-old boys age group. Karen Kane of Caribou outplayed Heather Tompkins of Presque Isle in the quarterfinals and went on to defeat teammate Nicole King in the championship to claim victory in the 13-15 year-old girls category. In the 16-18 girls division, Tera Egeler of Presque Isle moved up an age bracket to beat Krista Plourde of Caribou in three sets. Chuck Ames of Presque Isle won in the finals of the boys 16-18 category because of a forfeit by Jon Constant of Washburn.

Bell was named bank officer for First Citizens — Nathan D. Bell, originally from Mars Hill, joined People’s Heritage Bank as an officer in the bank’s Trust and Investment Group located in Bangor. Formerly a trust administrator at FCB’s federal bank in Dayton, Ohio, Bell’s responsibility for the administration of trust accounts for mid-coast, down east, central and northern Maine. He was a 1989 graduate of Cedarville College in Ohio and earned his law degree from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio; as well as a member of the American Bar Association.

25 Years Ago –  August 14, 1996

New company — George W. Akely took a position with the potato sales staff of the Ballard Seed Company, according to Vincent Ballard, company president. Ballard said that Akeley’s job was to assist in both seed and table potato sales. Akeley was formerly employed by the Maine Farmers exchange for 13 years. He was married to the former Esther Gallupe.

Bea Giberson won first division play — Club championship play took place at the Presque Isle Country Club Ladies Day Aug. 10. Winners included first division, Bea Giberson; second division, Evelyn Kimmel; third division, Viola Willard. There were two tables of bridge inplay in the morning, and six tables in the afternoon. Morning high was Louise Conant. Afternoon high, Bea Hanscom; second, Kay Brewer.

John P. Bishop was named general manager at Northeast Publishing — John P. Bishop, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, was named general manager of the Northeast Publishing Company by Richard K. Warren, vice president of the Bangor Publishing Company. Northeast Publishing Company, a subsidiary of Bangor Publishing, publishes the Aroostook Republican, the Presque Isle Star-Herald and the Houlton Pioneer Times. Bishop was a 1964 graduate of the University of Miami (Ohio) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He is a former research technologist and sales executive with the Great Northern Paper Company of Millinocket.
