UMPI requiring vaccination cards or negative testing to attend indoor Homecoming events

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Due to increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases locally, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will require proof of vaccination or negative testing for people who want to attend indoor Homecoming events this weekend.

While UMPI has not reported positive COVID-19 cases among students and staff, Aroostook County has been facing its largest surge in case numbers and hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic. Like other campuses in the UMaine System, UMPI has been requiring masks inside buildings regardless of vaccination status since mid-August.

Anyone wishing to attend indoor events such as tours of Preble Hall on Friday, Sept. 17, and Snowy Owl Market on Saturday, Sept. 18, must show their COVID-19 vaccination card and/or a negative test taken within 72 hours of the event.

All other events, including alumni soccer games on Sept. 18, will occur outdoors and will not require that participants or attendees wear masks.

UMPI will provide a booth in the lobby of Gentile Hall where people may show their proof of vaccination or test, according to event organizer Laurie Boucher.

The Snowy Owl Market is scheduled to take place inside Gentile Hall Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will showcase more than 45 crafters, student organizations and other local vendors. Face masks and social distancing will be required.
