100 Years Ago – Nov.  4, 1921

Historic building purchased The Blackhawk Putnam Homestead at the corner of North and Smyrna Streets, built in 1813 by Aaron Putnam, has been purchased by the Putnam Brothers.

Postal carrier retiring — David Watson, RFD carrier, will retire this week after almost 30 years of service at the Houlton Post Office.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1946

Freeley is USO district chairman — George Barnes, Vice Chairman at the USO today announced the appointment of District Chairman for the drive for funds for the USO. Austin Freeley of Houlton is the Chairman and will supervise the collections of funds.

To take the bench — Harry Baulch, well known Houlton lawyer and veteran of World War II, was nominated yesterday by Gov. Horace Hildreth to be the judge of Houlton Municipal Court.

50 Years Ago – Nov.  4, 1971

Kodak gives $1,500 — Ricker College has received an unrestricted grant of $1,5000 from the Eastman Kodak Company under the company’s 1971 Educational Aid Program, it was announced Tuesday by Ricker President Robert Matson.

Info Center in Houlton State Rep. Roy Bither told the Houlton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Tuesday that the State Highway Commission plans to construct a tourist information center in Houlton.

25 Years Ago – Oct 30, 1996

In the beginning According to Headmaster Jago, Greater Houlton Christian Academy is a new school. The school has roots with Christian education dating back to 1984. The Country Road Baptist Church under Pastor Rihard Rockwell had a vision for Christian education in the local area.

Make A Difference Day Houlton’s first experience with the National Community Volunteer Program, “Make A Difference Day,” went off without a hitch, according to Cecila Rhoda, one of the event’s organizers. Dubbed “Houlton On Call Day”, Saturday saw more than 30 community members of all ages and professions offering their labor and service to anyone within the local area who requested help with various tasks.
