THETFORD, Vermont — Teanne Ewings, a cross country runner for the Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy, capped off her incredible freshman campaign Saturday by becoming the first Shire to compete at the New England Interscholastic Championships.

Ewings was one of 239 schoolgirl athletes to tackle the challenging 3.11 mile course at Thetford Academy. She placed 52nd overall with a time of 21 minutes, 6.3 seconds.

“Our first runner to make it this far, Teanne ran on an already tough course which was made exponentially harder by the rain we received over the weekend,” coach Chris Rines said. “Teanne ran very well given the conditions.

Orono’s Ruth White won the race with a time of 18:44.73.

Caribou junior Kaylee Bell, the only other Aroostook County athlete to compete at New Englands, crossed the finish line at 22:26.7, which earned her a 139th place finish.

“Ruth, Teanne, and Kaylee all have personal bests of 17:28, 19:03, and 20:09 respectively, from this season, so you can see just how tough this course really was with the times they were able to turn in,” Rines said.
