115 Years Ago – Nov. 7, 1906
Nearly 50 acres — Hon. Eugene Holmes had 49 1/2 acres of potatoes planted on his farm on the New Sweden Road. He harvested 6466 barrels of potatoes from his planting.
Starch – – The starch factories are nearly through grating this year after a very successful season.
100 Years Ago – Nov. 10, 1921
Spuds take the train — More potatoes were moved out of Aroostook County over the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad during October than during any previous month in Aroostook potato history. A total of 3,682 carlots of spuds were hauled during the month of October.
Highest bowling score — Van Buren has a bowling champion. Recently Fred Theriault rolled up a string of 143 points in the Van Buren Bowling Alleys. This is believed to be the largest single score yet to be bowled in Aroostook.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 7, 1946
Scout drive now over $1,300 mark — The Boy Scout Fund Drive now in progress in Caribou has raised $1,300. Drive Chairman Rev. Walter Kellison stated yesterday he expects the $2,000 goal to be reached this year.
Caribou Boys and Girls Enjoy Halloween — Over 250 boys and girls enjoyed a real Halloween celebration under the supervision of Director Emery Plourde. Nylander Museum held the party at the youth center on Hallloween night.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 10, 1971
Unicef is $248 richer — The collection for Unicef made by Caribou trick-or-treaters on Halloween night totalled $248. Unicef notes that the collection this year marked the 25th Birthday of the United Nations Children’s Fund.
CHS Key Club — Recently elected officers of the Caribou High School Key Club are Fred Thomas, President; John Murphy, Vice President; Mr. McCormack, Advisor; Rick St. Peter, Secretary and Dave Crockett, Treasurer.
