HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835 assembled a crew of volunteers Wednesday, Dec. 15, to load and deliver three trucks full of food that had been collected and donated by lodge members over the past month.
The food was donated to Shelly Bouchard, a teacher at Houlton Middle-High School, for “Edie’s Cupboard,” a food pantry for students in grades 6-12. Edie’s Cupboard was developed to help students fight hunger issues at home.
Bouchard said she was overwhelmed with the amount of food donated, stating it would help so much in her efforts to feed hungry students and their families. Bouchard’s students rose to the occasion and volunteered to help members of the lodge unload and carry in the boxes.
Later that day, the Houlton Lodge presented the United Bikers of Maine area representative, Shelly Crandall along with Houlton Middle-High School guidance counselor, Erica Tweedie with several tables full of toys that were donated by members of the Houlton Elks Lodge over the past month.
All of the toys will be wrapped by faculty members of RSU 29 and disbursed within the district.
