On Monday evening, Feb. 7, Mapleton King Lion Rick Fowler presented the annual Lion of the Year Award to Lion Dennis Hoffses.
The Lion of the Year is a recognition by the Mapleton Lions Club of the member who consistently went above and beyond in the service to community and club. Hoffses is in his 30th year of membership in the Mapleton club.
He was sponsored by the late Dale McHatten, who worked for Hoffses at Country Kitchen Bread and thought he would make a terrific member in the club. In the late 1990s, Hoffses served three years as president of the Mapleton Lions Club.
Over the years, he has been a key leader in the club’s major projects. He co-manages the Mapleton Daze Lions Chicken Bar-B-Q, the Mapleton Lions Club Booth at the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest and, just last year, the club’s first Northern Maine Fair Food Booth. He has been part of the Mapleton Lions Main Street Christmas Lighting. Additionally, he handles the purchase of eyeglasses for those who are unable to afford them. If there is a fundraising raffle for the club, he is involved in managing the ticket sales.
For the last 22 years, he has served club treasurer. When the Mapleton Lions Club acquired the Mapleton Community Hall, which now the Mapleton Lions Hall, Lion Dennis became and still is the hall manager. Myra, his wife, has taken care of hall rentals, while Lion Dennis handled the operational oversight of the hall including rental supervision as well as all maintenance and repairs of the hall. As member of the club board of directors, Lion Dennis has wanted to see that other active and hardworking members receive this annual recognition. This year the club leadership decided the time was right recognize Lion Dennis for his many years of active and committed service to Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill. Congratulations to Lion Dennis Hoffses as Mapleton Lions Club Lion of the Year.
