In December 2021, the Mapleton Post Office building changed ownership after 23 years.
In 1998, the building was constructed on the former site of Mapleton’s most famous business, The Shanty Dairy Bar.
The burger and ice cream business was purchased by Dale and Sylvia McHatten. It had been in business from the early 1960’s until the decision was made to replace the business with a new post office.
The Shanty was visited by youngsters during the summer when the Mapleton Pool took its afternoon break. Also every winning Little League team was treated to an ice cream cone after each game. Finally, the Shanty was a place to get burgers and homemade french fries when was it too hot to cook at home in the spring and summer.
The new post office building was constructed by PNM Construction, who replaced the Shanty structure for Dale and Sylvia McHatten with the new post office. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held the first of January 1999 with Nancy Ash of Ashland starting as the postmistress.
While the McHattens owned the building, the United State Postal Service was and continues to be responsible for the upkeep, cleaning and care of the building.
Upon the passing of Dale McHatten in 2021, the decision was made to sell the building. Today the new owners are the Postal Buying Company out of Colorado.
