PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — When Maggee Currie was 8 years old she was inspired to help children enjoy a delicious and nutritious breakfast.

While volunteering at GIFT food pantry she came home in tears because she noticed that the only cereals on the shelf for families were raisin bran and shredded wheat. This is how her mission project “Compassion in a Box” started, with her passion and goal to put a smile on little ones’ faces as they start the day with something fun like Cap’n Crunch, Cookie Crisp or her favorite, Fruity Pebbles.

Since 2013 she has collected 2,873 boxes to donate to local food pantries. Every year, starting Feb. 14 and going to National Cereal Day on March 7, she collects cereal at local churches and schools.

She recently donated more than 100 boxes to the GIFT food pantry, along with 50 boxes to a Mapleton food pantry and 60 to one in Easton.
