SMYRNA, Maine — A tractor trailer driver escaped injury when he hit a ditch and the trailer overturned on Wednesday.

Harry Howe, 43, of Lincoln was driving a 2004 Peterbilt truck with a flatbed trailer at around 1:30 p.m. on May 4, delivering a load of lumber to Kauffman Metal in Smyrna.

As he attempted to exit the narrow driveway to turn left onto the main road, the trailer slid into a deep ditch and upended, according to Cpl. Dennis Quint of the Maine State Police.

The road was closed for approximately 90 minutes as personnel from Westerdahl’s Towing in Littleton partially unloaded the trailer and set it upright before towing the vehicle to their shop, Quint said.

Howe was not injured in the crash and was wearing a seatbelt. Speed was not a factor, police said.
