Katahdin Middle-High School announces top students

STACYVILLE, Maine – Shelley Lane, principal at Katahdin Middle-High School, has announced this year’s top students for Honor Parts at this year’s graduation ceremony.

Emily Beyer has been chosen as valedictorian, while Justin Hurlbert is salutatorian. Honors students are Victoria Hawkins, Nikita Keim, DaQuan Lindsey and Vanessa Tapley.

Beyer is the daughter of Chris and Jutta Beyer. She plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono to study business. Beyer has been the president of her class for all four years of high school and has also been the president of the National Honor Society. 

She played soccer, for which she was named All Aroostook three times, played basketball, and won the Aroostook Scholar Athlete Award. Her service to the community included assisting at basketball camp and planting flower barrels for the town of Patten. Beyer enjoys fishing and hanging out with friends and her dog. 

Justin Hurlbert has been named salutatorian for Katahdin Middle-High School’s Class of 2022.

Hurlbert is the son of Jason and Kelly Hurlbert. He plans to attend Northern Maine Community College to study automotive technology. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been the vice president of his class. He played soccer (named All Aroostook senior year), basketball (All Aroostook senior year), baseball (All Aroostook junior year) and volleyball. His service to the community includes lawn care and landscaping. He enjoys the outdoors, including hunting and fishing.

Hawkins is the daughter of Steve and Angie Hawkins. She plans to attend Northern Maine Community College to study medical coding. She has played soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball throughout her high school career. She has provided service to her school community by painting bleachers in the dugout and by helping the middle school plant flowers. In her free time, Hawkins loves to snowmobile and play video games. 

Keim is the daughter of Rickie and Bobbi Keim. She plans to attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle to study nursing. She has played soccer, softball and volleyball at KMHS and served her school community by helping with the middle school basketball team at both practice and games. She formerly worked as a CNA and is starting her new job at Flatlanders this summer. She enjoys hanging out with friends and she loves the outdoors including hunting, fishing, and sports.

Lindsey is the grandson of Dennis and Michelle Cloukey. He plans to attend the University of Southern Maine to study business analytics. He formerly participated in the electrical program at Region II and has played basketball at KMHS. He served his school community by helping with the middle school basketball team and by participating in Bike Maine. In his free time, he enjoys watching anime and playing video games. 

Tapley is the daughter of Jerry and Denise Tapley and stepdaughter of Matthew Proctor. She has been both secretary and treasurer of the National Honor Society. She has played volleyball, managed basketball and assisted with baseball. Tapley participated in BikeMaine three times and helped other community members by stacking wood. She loves the outdoors and has always had an interest in animal care and training, which has led her to helping out at the veterinary clinic in Island Falls.
