PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Eager spectators for the Presque Isle Wildcats and the Ellsworth Eagles cheered from the stands of the Gehrig Johnson Athletic Complex Saturday for a boys and girls soccer doubleheader.

The girls match ended in a 0-0 stalemate, while the Wildcat boys shut out Ellsworth, 3-0.

In the boys game, the Wildcats took an early lead in the first half. Senior Malachi Cummings netted the first goal for the Wildcats. Ellsworth tried to retaliate with aggressive plays made on the soccer ball for a few scoring opportunities, including a penalty shot by the Ellsworth Eagles that was saved by PI goalie Michael Langley.

Cummings netted another goal in the second half and the final goal came from Wildcat senior Jack Hallett.

Ellsworth struggled to keep up, having difficulty getting their shots past senior goalie Langley at 16 saves for the soccer game and Eagle goalie freshman Cooper Mitchell had six saves.

The Wildcats now stand at 5-4 halfway through the soccer season, with two upcoming away games on Oct. 4 at Mount Desert Island in Bar Harbor and another on Oct. 8 at Old Town. For Ellsworth, it was just their second loss on the year as the Eagles now stand at 6-2 for the season.

In the girls contest, both teams played aggressive soccer, but settled for the scoreless tie. Two five-minute overtime periods presented both teams with several opportunities to score, but neither could crack the scoreboard.

Freshman Elizabeth Boles led the Eagles in shots taken with three booted at the Wildcats goal, followed by her teammate sophomore Addison Atherton taking aim with two shots.

Wildcat senior Sidney Tawfall led her team in shots taken at the Eagles goal. The Presque Isle girls had 10 saves from sophomore goalie Jayden Harvell and Ellsworth sophomore goalie Jayden Sullivan had 11 saves.

With the tie, Presque Isle now stands at 4-4-1 on the year, and will play two upcoming away games at MDI Oct. 5 and at Old Town Oct. 8. Ellsworth is now 4-2-2 on the year.
