HOULTON, Maine — Downtown Houlton was filled with a variety of creatures and costumes Saturday afternoon for the third annual Shiretown Spooktacular event.

And the candy was certainly plentiful too as this year’s attendance once again proved to be outstanding.

Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, estimated that 1,100 children turned out for this year’s event.

“It was absolutely wonderful to see so many families in downtown Houlton Saturday,” Torres said. “We were all very pleased with how well everything went.”

Torres said she had prepared 800 bags of candy, along with an additional assortment of 350 pieces as backup after running out so quickly last year.

Organized by the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, Houlton Recreation Department and Serendipitous Dragonfly, the Shiretown Spooktacular has grown steadily in each of its first three years.

Initially held after dark in its first year, the past two years have seen the holiday event moved to the middle of the day. Local businesses and nonprofit organizations gave out candy to youths sporting all varieties of costumes this year, and some adults also joined in the fun too.

Local law enforcement from the Houlton Police Department and Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office were also on hand to pass out candy.

Characters from the Disney movie “Hocus Pocus 2” were quite popular this year for both the youths and the grownups. The traditional collection of superheroes, zombies and skeletons were also prevalent.

Torres said her favorite costume was a little girl dressed as a mushroom with an infant sibling dressed as a snail.
