Houlton Parks and Recreation Department announces winter activities

HOULTON, Maine – The days are getting colder and winter is now upon us. The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for its annual winter activities. The following programs are being offered this season.

Kids’ Night Out – Looking for a night out or want to get some Christmas shopping done? Sign your kids up for our Kids’ Night Out program. We will have winter activities including games, crafts, contests, prizes, snacks, and more. 

This program is for anyone in grades pre-K-Grade 5 at the Rec Center from 5:30-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, or Friday, Dec. 9. People may register for one night or both nights. The cost is $10 for Houlton residents and $15 for non-Houlton residents per night. There will be a maximum number of 24 kids per night. Registration is required.

Jolly Holiday Party – The Rec Department is throwing a Christmas Party. Join staff for games, goodies, prizes, and more on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 12:30-2 p.m. This party is for anyone in grades Pre-K-Grade 5. There are a maximum of 24 spots for this party, and registration is required. The cost is $10 for Houlton residents and $15 for non-Houlton residents. 

Vacation Fun Program –  Looking for some activities during Christmas break? This program includes games, crafts, goodies, science fun, and other activities. Open for anyone in grades pre-K-Grade 5. Participants will meet at the Rec Center from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday-Thursday, Dec. 27-29. The cost of the program is $20 for Houlton residents and $30 for non-Houlton residents. There is a maximum number of 24 kids for the program. Registration is required. 

Games Galore and More Program – This seven-week program is open to any children in grades Pre-K-Grade 5. Every week will offer something new, such as crafts, games, tournaments, contests, science experiments, and more. The price is $95 for Houlton residents and $135 for non-Houlton residents. Games Galore takes place at the Houlton Rec Center, 3-5 p.m. every Wednesday, starting on Jan. 4, and ending on Feb. 15. Registration is required.

Intro to Cross Country Skiing – The Rec Department is excited to be offering this new program! Just starting cross country skiing or wanting to learn? This beginner program, led by Owen Gallop, will introduce and practice skills such as balance, stride, standing up, and more. Anyone in grades 3-5 are welcome to join. Lessons will take place from noon-1 p.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 7, 14, and 21 in Community Park. The cost of the program is $20 for Houlton residents and $30 for non-Houlton residents. A minimum of six kids is required for the program and there is a maximum of 10 kids. Equipment will be provided. Registration is required. 

Jr High Holiday Dance – Grab your friends and get those dancing shoes on, the Rec Department is hosting a dance for Houlton Junior High students in grades 6-8. The dance takes place on Friday, Dec. 16 at the Rec Center, from 7-9 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. Join us for some fun with music, dancing, and snacks. Once you enter the building, you may not leave until your ride has arrived. Once you have left the building, there is no returning. Chaperones will be present for the entire night.
