WASHBURN, Maine — It was an exciting match up for the Class D girls varsity basketball game in Washburn on Wednesday, Dec. 21 that ended with an Ashland victory 37-35.
Washburn started out the game with strong offensive plays that saw the Beavers leading by two points, but the Hornets quickly retaliated in the first half with a combined score of 24 points to Washburn’s 17 points.
Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities, but were thwarted by aggressive defense from Beaver and Hornet players that swatted the ball away during multiple drives down the court.
Beaver Madelyn Johnston was the top scorer draining 13 points, while Hannah Scott managed to put up six points for Washburn. Hornet Macy MacLean netted 10 points with her teammate Haily Poulin racking up eight points.
Johnston was the only player to sink a 3-point shot for Washburn with Ashland making a few attempts but missed the mark.
In the second half, Ashland scored 11 points to Washburn’s nine points in the third quarter that saw Ashland play aggressive defense on the Washburn side of the court.
During the 4th quarter, Ashland hit a slump only scoring two points from Kayla MacLean as Washburn caught its second wind coming back with nine points but not enough to win.
Washburn is at 2-3 for the girls varsity basketball in the Class D North season with Ashland standing at 2-1.
The boys varsity basketball game was canceled due to Ashland not having enough players, who were out sick with the cold or flu viruses, according to boys varsity basketball coach Lizz Theriault.
