Second grade students at Houlton Elementary School put their learning into action. The language arts program introduced a variety of styles of writing this year. Included in the curriculum was a unit on persuasive writing.
Students demonstrated their skills by partnering with the Houlton Humane Society to help adopt some of the animals at the local shelter. The students wrote and drew pictures about an animal that resides at the shelter.
The finished projects have been on display at a variety of Houlton businesses. It has been entertaining for customers to read the student’s work.

“Hi, my name is Skip. I am four years old. I am a tank of a cat! People say I am a very friendly cat. I am soft and fluffy. I like to play and eat. I am really cute. That’s why you should adopt me.” (By Gage.)
“Hi, my name is Paisley. I am 10 years old. I am a calico cat. That means I have three colors, brown, white and yellow. I am really sweet and you will love me. I am very talkative and you will love my singing. I am a friendly girl. I will snuggle with you. I’m the oldest cat at the shelter and I would like to be adopted. “Hi, my name is Twinkle. I am a brown, black, orange and white cat. I am the most popular cat and I lost half of one ear because of frost bite. I had a great recovery. I am very cuddly and sweet. My eyes don’t open all the way. My nose is part brown, part white.” (By Lexus.)
Dear future family, “My name is Erin. I’m very lonely since my sister go adopted. Her name is Meadow. I’m very young. I’m white, black and brown. I’m really cute.” (By Amelia.)
