American Legion needs service members

To the editor:

My name is Edward J. Ellis. I grew up in Ashland. Schooling was where I made up my mind; I’d follow the path of my father and so on. I graduated in 1968 and went into the service, with others from my class. My father served in the Asian Theater, where I also went for two years in Vietnam.

I also served as first vice for the American Legion Department of Maine in District 5. When I moved back to The County, I was an officer in Eagle Lake. Now I am the American Legion Department of Maine district commander for the 17th District. I am interested in getting fellow service men and women to come and join the American Legion. Our young need some guidance if they join the military service.

I’m asking each post in District 17 to set a date and time when I may come and be a part of your post for a couple of hours.

Let’s do this together as a team. Pick a day and time for coffee and doughnuts. Let’s work together to get more service members to join the American Legion. Young or old, we can offer service officers papers for a pension, medical help or just a chance to chat and renew friendships and memberships.

The sons and daughters may also find the Legion family interesting. Give the service of the American Legion a chance.
