HOULTON, Maine — The Aroostook County grand jury handed up 42 indictments for December, including a man charged with manslaughter after a fatal crash in Presque Isle.

William Ofria, 49, of Cape Coral, Florida, was indicted for manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence, driving to endanger, criminal OUI, cruelty to animals and violating conditions of release.

Ofria’s vehicle crashed head-on into a car driven by Nichole Martin, 43, of Presque Isle on Oct. 7 at the intersection of State and Connector roads. Martin died of her injuries.

Police said Ofria smelled of alcohol and marijuana and was slurring his words at the scene. Officers discovered empty and full beer cans and marijuana inside Ofria’s vehicle.

In addition to vehicular manslaughter, he was charged initially with driving under the influence of intoxicants. He had been out on bail from another OUI offense at the time.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but an indication that there is enough evidence in a case to move forward with a trial.
