50 Years Ago — Jan. 30, 1974

They carried away the cow – As part of Sampson’s weekly “family night,” various cuts of meat are given away to lucky shoppers. Store manager Bob Williams said approximately 250 people arrive each family night “and we feel the public really enjoys this weekly get-together.” Assistant manager Richard Cray helped with the giveaways.

25 Years Ago — Feb. 3, 1999

Stolen car recovered in Fort Kent – A jailhouse recommendation led an alleged car thief to Fort Kent, where a citizen’s attention coupled with cooperation between law enforcement agencies are credited for an arrest and the recovery of a stolen car in Fort Kent. According to Maine State Police Trooper Daniel Marquis, Sean Harrison, 32, of Providence, Rhode Island, was arraigned in Caribou Superior Court on Monday on charges of Class B theft, hindering apprehension, operating a motor vehicle without a license and theft of mislaid property.

10 Years Ago — Jan. 29, 2014 

Two snowmobiles sink through ice — Two snowmobilers were unharmed after their snowmobiles became submerged in open water early Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 2014. Caleb Fernald and Jake Deschaine of Brewer were operating their snowmobiles on the thoroughfare between Long Lake and Mud Lake when they came upon the open water, according to a press release from the Maine Warden Service. The water in the area is about 3 to 5 feet deep, according to the press release. Both riders were able to crawl out and seek help at a nearby residence.
