Wisdom boys defeat Washburn in tense D North playoff game

WASHBURN, Maine — The Wisdom boys defeated Washburn 61-53 in a Class D North playoff basketball game Wednesday night. 

The ninth-seeded St. Agatha team will now face No. 1 Schenck High School in a quarterfinal match at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Washburn had a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, with a score of 9-5 in their favor. But by halftime Wisdom gained, and maintained, a close lead for the remainder of the game. The score at halftime was 21-27 in Wisdom’s favor, and 35-42 at the end of the third quarter.

Sam Tardif of Wisdom scored the most points for his team with a total of 19, and Garrett Plourde of Washburn scored a total of 24 points.

“It was a nail-biter,” Wisdom coach Nate Boynton said after the game. “Washburn’s a tough team; they don’t give up.”

The coach said he’s looking forward to facing off against Schenck in the upcoming game.

“It’ll be a tough task for us, but a good experience for my young crew here,” he said.
