75 Years Ago-March 10, 1949

Houlton Girl Joins Staffff Of Tacoma Radio Station – Miss Carolyn Chadwick has joined the KTBI staff in the continuity department. A graduate of Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton. Carolyn continued her education with three more years of college studies at a commercial art school i nBoston, followed by two years in designing and advertising for Towle Silversmiths in Massachusetts, then a two-year hitch with the U.S. Navy as a petty officer, second class; from there she worked three years with the Young and Rubicam Advertising Agency in New York, and then came to the West Coast. 

Els Ladies’ Bowling Club Defeats Dux Teams – The Elks Ladies’ Bowling club entertained the first and second teams of the Dux Ladies’ at a match, which was followed by a supper, Friday. The Elks won both matches.

50 Years Ago-April 3, 1974

Gentle, Severson Named To Trust Company Board – Warren D. Gentle, a Littleton businessman, and Gary A. Severson, a Houlton attorney, has been elected to the board of directors of the Houlton Trust Company according to an announcement by David K. Abbott, president. The Houlton Trust Company is an affiliate of Merrill Bankshares Company in Bangor. Mr. Gentle has been a potato grower and shipper since 1952 when he became associated as a partner with his father, Arthur. He is also president of Fitzpatrick and Gentle Corporation of Houlton, as a dealer in used automobiles and truck sales, and he is a dealer for Agrico Chemical Company. With The exception of a two-year period when he was employed by Commercial Credit Corporation as a direct loan manager, Mr. Gentle has specialized in agriculture since 1945. A Houlton Native, Mr. Severson was a graduate of the University of Maine with B.S. degree in 1961 and he received his J.D., cum laude from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 1965. He was admitted to the Maine Bar in 1965 and was also admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1966.

Dow Assigned To Chanute AFB – Airman Leigh B. Down, son of Nevers R. Dow of Linneus, has been assigned to Chanute AFB, III, after completing Air Force basic training. During his six weeks at the Air Training Command’s Lackland AFB, Texas, he studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. The airman has been assigned to the technical training center at Chanute for specialized training in the aircraft equipment maintenance field. Airman Dow is a 1973 graduate of Hodgdon HIgh School.

McDonald’s Senior All-star, All-Academic teams named – Houlton’s Jacob Cowperthwaite has been recognized for his academic achievement, as well as his athletic talent by being named to the McDonald’s All- Academic team. Houlton’s Mike Weston and WIllie Sleeper, Southern Aroostook’s Sam Michaud, Hodgdon’s Amanda Quint and Katahdin’s Jen McNally will participate in the McDonald’s Senior East-West All-star Basketball games on Saturday.
