HOULTON, Maine — More than 40 people attended an ecumenical service celebrating the beginning of the “Season of Creation” at the amphitheater in Monument Park in Houlton on August 30. At the service, hosted by the Church of the Good Shepherd, people from several local congregations representing four denominations shared in reading scripture, song and prayer to honor and pledge to care for all of creation. The bright sun, crisp fall air, and gentle breeze added greatly to the atmosphere of fellowship, prayer, and commitment.
The time from September 1 until October 4 has been designated the “Season of Creation” in many denominations around the US and the world. The theme of the season in 2024 is “To Hope and Act with Creation.” Paula Lilley offered an inspiring message about putting hope into action on behalf of creation. First fruits in the form of vegetables, flowers and fruits from attendees’ gardens were collected and blessed. Many people stayed after the service for an informal time of fellowship, agreeing that it was good to be together.
