99 Years Ago – November 5, 1925

Dug out a potato shaped like a hog — Patrick Walsh of Trafalgar Township always raised a good crop of potatoes and generally dug up the largest spuds near his hog pen. To show the influence of the environment, Mr. Walsh unearthed a good sized potato near his hog pen which resembled a Berkshire hog in every way: head, ears, eyes, body, legs and even a small tail. All the hog shaped spud lacked to make it complet was bristles and grunts. It was a rare spud and one that any Irishman would be proud of.

50 Years Ago – November 6, 1974

Brockville boosted the United Fund by $1,200 — Brockville Fertilizers, Inc., joined the ranks of 100 percent participation firms in the United Fund effort. According to Penny Goldberg, general chairwoman of the drive, Brockville’s entire force of 17 had made contributions amounting to $610. This amount was matched by the firm for a total of $1,220.oo. Albert R. Godbout was the chapter plan chairman for Brockville. In presenting the results to Mrs. Goldberg, he said that he had been trying to attain 100 percent for the five years that he had been chairman. He also reported that they tried for a 10 percent increase over the previous year, but surpassed that goal and managed a 13.7 percent increase over the 1974 pledge. Mrs. Goldberg, in accepting the pledge, commended Godbout and the people who worked at Brockville for their compassion for the less fortunate.

Antique show profits exceeded two thousand — The annual fall meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Arthur R. Gould MemorialHospital was held at the Northeastland Hotel Oct. 30. President Beryl Parker opened the meeting. Treasurer Barbara Flora announced that the profits of the annual antique show were $2,584.58. This money was set aside to finish items for the solarium in the hospital’s new wing. Over 100 persons attended the antique show. The Remembrance Fund report was read by Maxine Eber and the group discussed the special coronary care fund. It was reported that Mrs. Dean Donahue had agreed to be the instructor for the hospital’s 16 Candy Stripers. Mrs. Donna Carlin, R.N., and Mrs. Ann Smith, R.N., were the advisors. 

Owls end season with soccer win — Coach Bill Casavant’s University of Maine at Presque Isle soccer team ended their season in a winning manner as they beat a tough playing Ricker College 2 to 1 here Monday afternoon, Oct. 28, in a Northeast Conference scrap. The Bulldogs started off fast and pushed one into the net at 17:21 of the first half, when Dan Moore scored with an assist from Fede Peinado. Later in the same half, the Owls tied it up when high-scoring Karl Frank scored with an assist from Alan Smith. This came at 31:21. The UMPI aggregation hung up the deciding tally at 23:05 of the second half, when John Shaw scored with an assist from Alan Smith. The Owls closed their campaign with seven victories, three defeats and four ties.

25 Years Ago – November 10, 1999

A Washburn native reached the top post in State Police — Michael Sperry may have been the state’s top cop, but he still came home to Aroostook County to visit his grandparents. The Washburn native was sworn as the new chief of the Maine State Police, following the footsteps of Col. Mac Dow, another County son. A 1973 graduate of Washburn District High School and the son of Richard and Shirley Sperry of Washburn. Sperry said he decided on a career in law enforcement early on. Two of his role models were state troopers Arnie Gahagan and Dave Armstrong. After earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Southern Maine. Sperry attended the Maine State  Police Academy, joining the force in 1977.6

Panther golfers dominated the league all-star team — Four golfers from the Central Aroostook Panthers headline the list of Aroostook League golf all-stars for the 1999 season. To become an all-star, a golfer must place among the top 10, either in scoring average or match points accumulated. The Panthers’ Craig Durost, Craig Allen, Justin Woodworth and Ryan Bell all qualified for the elite team, which included a total of 15 golfers from six County squads. All four players helped Central Aroostook place first in the Aroostook League. Other all-stars included Brad Boyles, Brock Griffin and Micah Desmond, all of Presque Isle; Roger Marecaux of Ashland; Jeremy London and Tom Moakler, both of Houlton; Derek Jepson, Emily Jose, Travis Beaulieu and Jason Griffeth, all of Caribou; and Travis Cyr of Madawaska.
