Bobcat bobbed – Allen Gendreau of Grand Isle, bagged a 30-pound Bobcat in the woods in back of his family’s farm on a Saturday morning in November of 1974. He flushed the cat, estimated at between four and five years old, in a field at about 10-foot range and blasted it with his 12-gauge shotgun. The cat, gray, with striped front legs and stubby “bobbed” tail, will be skinned, and the pelt will be sold. He also may try for the $15 bounty he understands is offered on Bobcats, added Mr. Gendreau.

Valley’s blue ribbon school – Officials at Dr. Levesque School in Frenchville learned their school was among the top 1 percent in the country. They’ve been celebrating ever since. On Sunday in November of 1999, the party grew to include more than 400 students, faculty, staff, parents and friends who filled the tiny school’s gymnasium to bursting for a special ceremony recognizing the school’s elite status as one of 266 nationwide awarded a US Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award in May. “Any school in the Blue Ribbon Program is in the upper echelon of schools across the country,” said Danielle Crosby, US DOE public affairs officer.

The contradictions between state and federal guidelines for dealing with people who may have been exposed, and Hickox’s refusal to follow the more stringent state protocols, were at the root of what caused worry for some people in Fort Kent.
