PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks Lodge was filled by those attending the Veterans Day dinner there on Monday, November 11. The meal was free to all military veterans, current military personnel and their spouses.
The dinner featured several food choices incorporating moose meat, including chili, American chop suey, lasagna, shepherd’s pie, mooseballs with Anglassatu sauce, Swiss steak and moose stew.
The moose meat for these recipes had been provided by the Maine Wardens Service following their seizure of an illegally killed moose calf.
Mi’kmaq Farms donated trout, which were pan-fried. Additional selections included seafood chowder and chicken stew. A wide variety of desserts home cooked by numerous Elk members were also offered.
Every veteran in attendance had their choice from door prizes donated by numerous local merchants and restaurants.
According to Tina Dougherty, exalted ruler of Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, “Hosting the Veterans Day supper was extremely gratifying for the many participating Elks on account of the large crowd and the countless expressions of appreciation from the veterans in attendance. We look forward to hosting this event next year in accordance with our motto that ‘As long as there are veterans, the Elks will never forget them.’”
