MADAWASKA LAKE, Maine – A motorist driving a Toyota Rav 4 was transported to Cary Medical Center by Caribou Fire and Ambulance following an accident that occurred at 12:30 a.m. on Route 161, according to North Lakes Fire & Rescue Chief Darren Woods.
The incident happened north of Madawaska Lake, just beyond the rest area on the southbound side.
When North Lakes responded, Woods said the vehicle was off the road and in the trees.
Woods said the road was wet and slushy when they arrived on the scene.
The department, after the incident, urged residents via social media to drive more cautiously as colder weather approaches.
“Winter driving has begun,” the post read, “please make sure you drive appropriately.”
Woods could not say what caused the accident or the condition of the motorist, as the investigation is being handled by the Maine State Police. The state police on Monday did not provide any additional details about the incident.
Woods said the vehicle sustained extensive damage and that they were on the scene clearing the roadway for about two hours. State Police and Caribou Fire & Ambulance were also on the scene.
“We encourage all motorists to use caution along Route 161,” Woods said, “watching out for animals crossing and slowing down during inclement weather.”
