99 Years Ago – December 24, 1925

An old resident pleasantly remembered — Mr. James H. Oak, one of Presque Isle’s oldest and most highly esteemed residents, was pleasingly honored by his fellow members of the K. P. Lodge Wednesday evening. The affair which was in the nature of a gift to Mr. Oak intended to testify to the goodwill and friendship of his fellow members of the K. P. Lodge, took place in Old Fellow’s Hall. There was a good attendance and the meeting was presided over by Chancellor Commander, Phil Patrick.

50 Years Ago – December 25, 1974

Dog obedience graduation held Thursday — The Central Aroostook Humane Society held graduation exercises upon completion of its third dog obedience school Thursday evening, Dec. 21. Mrs. Gloria Berube, director for the Humane Society, reported 12 members completed the obedience course. Trophy winners were: Marge Frymire and Duchess, first place in the adult class; Debbie Thorne and Lucky, second place; Maynard McEwen and Toby took the third place ribbon with fourth place went to Paul Fitzsimmons and Petite. Mrs. Marlene Gauronski provided the judging for the exhibition with John Colton, president of the Humane Society, presenting the trophies and ribbons to the winners.

Mapleton Star Scouts — Two members of Boy Scouts Troop 170 of Mapleton became Star Scouts at a Court of Honor held Dec. 19 at the Mapleton Community Hall. The two scouts were David McPherson and Scott Hoffses. The awards were given to the Scouts by Scoutmaster Pete Norris. The National President’s Award was presented to Troop 170 by Walter Morrison.

O’Donnell’s promoted local man — Joseph H. O’Donnell, president of O’Donnell’s Express, announced the appointment of Storer E. Eager to the position of assistant to the president during the company’s year end board of directors meeting at Presque Isle. Eager assumed his duties and relocated to O’Donnell’s new complex in Billerica, Maine. Eager, 31, joined O’Donnell’s Express as director of safety and personnel in January of 1970, upon separation from active duty with the U.S. Army.

25 Years Ago – December 29, 1999

Farmer of the Year — After more than 25 years of growing potatoes, Fred Flewelling had no regrets. Flewelling was named the 2000 Farmer of the Year by the Maine Potato Board and honored at a dinner along with Young Farmers of the Year Brent and Neil Grass. This was not the first time he had been honored. The previous year, the National Potato Council named Flewelling its 1998 National Seed Potato Farmer. Maine Potato Board President Andrew Yaeger called Flewelling “an excellent choice,” in announcing the award. “He is well-known in the industry and this area … [and] well-respected throughout the country and in the seed industry.” Flewelling had farmed with his father, Bill, since 1974. He was 21 years old when he started after earning a degree in agricultural resource and economics from the University of Maine at Orono.

Davis re-elected as chairman of SAD 1 board — Robert Davis was re-elected chairman of the School Administrative District 1 board of directors at the board’s Dec. 8 meeting, Lucy Richard was elected vice chairman. Both votes were unanimous. This was Davis’ third year as board chairman. He complimented school board members past and present for their commitment to their service and the respect they show each other at meetings. Board members also elected the three members of the finance committee for 2000. They were Nancy Cronkite, Jerry Desmond and Paul Lynch.Senechal received award — Linda Senechal, co-owner of Cozy Corner Collectibles in Fort Fairfield and Cozy Corner II at the Aroostook Center Mall was one of five recipients of Appreciation Awards at the annual meeting from Maine centers for Women, Work and Community held at the Senator Inn in Augusta on Dec. 6. Senechal was recognized for her many contributions and long standing support of the Presque Isle and Houlton centers.
