Merchants’ association elected new officers — The Star-Herald’s report of the banquet of the Merchants’ Association omitted by inadvertence, mention of the officers elected for the ensuing year, which were as follows: President H. K. Graves; vice president, Harry R. O’Donnell; secretary and treasurer, M. S. W. Dingwall; executive committee, E. I. Waldwell, J. A. Riley, George Noyes, N. W. Downing, H. B. Green. Omission was also made of the fact that Senator A. C. T. Wilson, in connection with the business meeting made some very pertinent and excellent remarks touching the Northern Maine Fair and its claims upon the public for stock contributions and support. G. Frank Higgins also discussed the subject of freight rates.
50 Years Ago – January 1, 1975
Animal shelter officially opened — The Central Aroostook Humane Society officially opened the facilities of its new animal shelter to the public Saturday, Dec. 21, with approximately 125 people touring the building during the six hour open house. The day was described as a “huge success,” according to a Humane Society spokesman. Three cats and two dogs were placed in homes, new members were added to the present 100 members of the Humane Society, a Christmas tree was decorated by interested persons with numerous denominations of U.S. currency and money was received for the purchase of two additional dog cages and one more cat cage. All contributions during the open house totaled approximately $600.
Four earned associates in justice — The first graduates in the criminal justice program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle were announced. Completing their academic course work for the associate of arts degrees in criminal justice were Darryl Jackson and Thomas Kerrigan of Presque Isle, James Camick of Limestone and O’Neil Saucier of Fort Fairfield.

Local players gain state soccer honors — All-State and All-Eastern Maine teams were announced by the Maine Soccer Coaches Association, and several local players received recognition.Shane Bradstree, a senior forward for the Central Aroostook Panthers, and Jeff Yaeger, a senior goalie for the Presque Isle Wildcats, were named to the boys’ all-state team. On the girls side, Brianna Blanchard, a senior midfielder for the Presque Isle Lady Wildcats, was selected to the all-state team. Several players from the region made Eastern Maine all-star teams for their particular class. Yaeger was named to the Class A boys team, while Rustin Lovewell of Ashland, Kyle Thibodeau of Washburn and Jeff Blackstone of Easton joined Bradstreet on the Class D squad. Blanchard and Lady Wildcat teammate Melissa Hendrickson were selected to the Class A girls team, while those making the Class D squad included Amanda Martin and Sarah Dwyer, both of Ashland, and Vanessa Sellars of Washburn.
Christmas presents — All offices of Katahdin Trust Company from Patten to Caribou collected Christmas presents for victims of the Battered Women’s Project for the holiday season. Those who presented the gifts collected in Presque Isle were Tori Elliott, Holly Tompkins, Debbie White, Bobbi-Jo Thornton, Cindy Bell, Valerie Maynard and Nina Moser from the Battered Women’s Project.Forsythe appointed at TAMC — The Aroostook Medical Center announced the appointment of Jane Forsythe to the position of Vice President of Nursing. Forssythe, who earned a bachelor of science in nursing from the Alaska Methodist University and a master of health administration from Central Michigan University, had an extensive background in nursing management with the primary focus of critical care services.
