To the editor:
I want to thank Sen. Susan Collins for her leadership in co-authoring the Social Security Fairness Act. This important legislation fixes a rule that reduced Social Security benefits for teachers, firefighters, police officers, state employees and other public employees because they also earned pensions from other jobs. Many of these individuals felt this rule was unfair.
These workers have spent their lives serving our communities and deserve the retirement money they earned. For too long, outdated rules took away part of their Social Security benefits, but this bill finally makes it fair.
Over the past four years, I have knocked on many doors and spoken with a number of Maine state and public-sector employees who were deeply concerned about this very issue. I shared in their concerns but this was a problem that needed to be taken care of on the federal level. Sen. Collins heard you loud and clear.
She has shown she cares about standing up for public servants and making sure they get treated fairly. On behalf of everyone affected by this change, thank you, Sen. Collins, for fighting for what’s right.
