A Fort Fairfield man is in jail on burglary charges after trying to flee through the woods.

Devin Tracy, 32, was arrested Monday after police discovered him hiding in a barn, Fort Fairfield Police Chief Matthew Cummings said.

The department was called to Maple Grove Road in Fort Fairfield when a resident reported a suspicious person in the area. The homeowner was away but noted the man on his doorbell camera, Cummings said.

On arrival, Cummings discovered someone had broken into the residence through a basement window, and he could see a man fleeing through a field and into the woods.

Local police, along with U.S. Border Patrol, Maine State Police and Maine Warden Service, traced the footprints and found Tracy hiding in the third story of a barn on Hoyt Road, Cummings said.

Tracy, who was on probation, was charged with burglary and theft, which are Class C crimes, and aggravated criminal mischief. Class C crimes are punishable by up to five years imprisonment and up to a $5,000 fine.

Tracy is at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, where he awaits a Tuesday court appearance.
