Grand jury indicts Easton man who struck buggy

HOULTON, Maine — The Aroostook County grand jury handed up 28 indictments for April, including an Easton man who struck a horse-drawn buggy after leading police on a chase.

Anthony Vangel, 34, was indicted for eluding, escape, operating under the influence, reckless conduct, criminal speed, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest, operating after suspension and two counts of violating conditions of release.

The charges stemmed from a Feb. 25 crash on Fort Road in Presque Isle. Vangel had failed to appear in court as directed, and police encountered him in the Aroostook Centre Mall parking lot. He allegedly sped away with police in pursuit, reaching 90 miles per hour in wintry road conditions.

Vangel lost control of his vehicle and hit the buggy, after which he was arrested and taken to the Aroostook County Jail.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but an indication that there is enough evidence in a case to move forward with a trial.
