Easton man strikes horse-drawn buggy after police chase

An Easton man who allegedly led police on a vehicle chase Tuesday morning struck a horse-drawn buggy carrying six children, but no injuries were reported, according to Presque Isle Public Information Officer Kim Smith.

Anthony Vangel, 34, led police on the alleged high-speed chase on Fort Road in Presque Isle. He was arrested after the crash.

Vangel had failed to appear as ordered at the Aroostook County Jail and was on bail related to 10 charges, including aggravated trafficking with a firearm, burglary, theft, forgery and violation of bail, Smith said.

After police confronted him in the Aroostook Centre Mall parking lot, he allegedly sped away on the Fort Road. Due to speeds reaching 90 miles per hour and adverse road conditions, police ended the pursuit, Smith said.

Shortly thereafter, Vangel lost control of his vehicle, spun and struck the buggy, after which police arrested him.

He now faces new charges, including operating after suspension, operating under the influence, eluding police, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest, criminal speed, failure to report and violation of bail.

He was taken to the Aroostook County Jail.

No further information was immediately available.
