HOULTON, Maine — The Interact Club of the Meduxnekeag, in partnership with the Houlton Recreation Department and the Aroostook County Cornhole League, will host a cornhole tournament on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Gentle Memorial Building, 128 Main St. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., and bags will fly at 6 p.m. Entry is just $5 per player, with all proceeds supporting Rotary International’s Polio Plus Foundation. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.
Polio is a highly infectious disease that once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children every year. Thanks to global vaccination efforts — led by Rotary International since it launched PolioPlus in 1985 — cases of polio have been reduced by 99.9% worldwide. However, the disease has not yet been eradicated, and continued immunization and monitoring efforts are critical to prevent a resurgence. Funds raised through events like this help Rotary continue delivering vaccines, surveillance and emergency response in high-risk areas until polio is gone for good.
The Interact Club of the Meduxnekeag is a youth service club for students ages 12–18 sponsored by the Houlton Rotary Club. Interact empowers young people to discover the power of service, develop leadership skills and make a difference both locally and globally. The club recently welcomed new Rotarian advisors Angelina Jackman and Ally Quinn, who join current mentor Christy Fitzpatrick in guiding students as they organize impactful projects like this PolioPlus fundraiser.
“Ending polio has been Rotary’s top humanitarian priority for nearly 40 years, and we’re proud to see the next generation — our Interact students — taking the lead to help finish the job,” said Jackman.
Community members are encouraged to gather friends, register on-site and enjoy a night of competition for a life-changing cause. Even those who don’t play are welcome to cheer on teams and support the effort to End Polio Now.
