FORT KENT, Maine – Northern Maine Medical Center is proud to announce the launch of COMPASS, a cutting-edge telemedicine platform designed to bring specialized medical expertise directly to the bedside of patients in our community. We are thrilled to bring critical care and pulmonology to Fort Kent now, with the addition of neurology and cardiology in 2026! This innovative service aims to enhance local access to high-quality care, reducing the need for patients to travel to receive vital care.

What is COMPASS?

COMPASS (Comprehensive Patient Assessment & Specialist Support) leverages advanced telehealth technology to connect patients with board-certified specialists in various fields, including Critical Care and Pulmonology that will be available at Northern Maine Medical Center’s inpatient units and Emergency Room. Through secure video consultations, patients can receive expert evaluations and treatment plans without leaving the comfort of their local hospital.

Key benefits of COMPASS:

Local access to specialist care: Patients can consult with specialists without the need for long-distance travel, ensuring timely and convenient care.

Enhanced continuity of care: Local healthcare providers can collaborate seamlessly with specialists, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated treatment plans.

Cost-effective solution: By reducing the need for patient transfers and out-of-town referrals, COMPASS helps manage healthcare costs while maintaining high-quality care standards.

A commitment to rural healthcare:

“At Northern Maine Medical Center, we are committed to providing our community with the best possible care,” said Jeff Zewe, president and CEO of NMMC, “With COMPASS, we are breaking down geographical barriers and ensuring that our patients have access to the specialized care they deserve, right here at home.”
