PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Members of Aroostook Iron CrossFit celebrated one year in business on Veterans Day with a special workout honoring those who served.
“The CrossFit organization has a tradition of ‘hero’ workouts. These are tributes to individual fallen military personnel or to our armed forces in general,” said Paige Huston, head coach at Aroostook Iron. “These workouts are typically harder than our normal routines, but like everything in CrossFit, they can be modified to work for anyone.”
As an example, she noted the Veterans Day workout included box jumps, but many people stepped instead of jumped. The gym also offers boxes of varying heights to make the movement fit the person.

Aroostook Iron CrossFit, which is located in the Aroostook Centre Mall, had more than 30 people at classes throughout the day on Nov. 11. They ranged in age from 20s to 80s and had a variety of body types, fitness levels and reasons for being there.
“Whether you’re looking to be healthier, leaner, stronger, faster or all of the above, CrossFit is right for you,” Huston said. “And you’ll be part of a community that cheers you on, helps you be better, and celebrates your wins.”
That positivity was on display as members sweated their way through pushups, burpees, pullups and more on the business’s first anniversary. While the clock ticked down and the music thumped, people called out encouragement to each other. When time was up, there were fist bumps and high fives all around.
“We’ve been here for a year, getting fitter and having fun together,” said Aroostook Iron member Brad Wolverton. “I honestly can’t imagine my life without Crossfit. I couldn’t go to a regular gym and do what I can do here with this community around me.”
Aroostook Iron CrossFit is located inside Omni Fitness at the mall in Presque Isle. More info is available on Facebook and Instagram or by emailing AroostookIronCrossFit@gmail.com.
