PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Special Olympics Aroostook is proud to announce its annual Basketball Day, taking place on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Presque Isle Community Center. This highly anticipated event brings together athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters from across Aroostook County for a full day of skill-building, teamwork and fun.

Basketball Day gives athletes the opportunity to practice and showcase fundamental basketball  skills through a round-robin–style tournament. The event emphasizes confidence, sportsmanship and physical fitness while celebrating the abilities and determination of every participant. This year’s Basketball Day is expected to be well attended, with more than 140 athletes registered to participate.

In addition to these events, basketball season is in full swing for The Snowdogs and the Presque Isle, Caribou and Houlton unified teams. Teams have been competing throughout the winter and will wrap up their seasons in March with end-of-season tournaments, highlighting the dedication and teamwork of athletes and partners across the county.

The community is also invited to mark their calendars for the Annual Special Olympics Aroostook Spring Games, scheduled for May 8 at Presque Isle Middle School, with a rain date of  May 15. The Spring Games are among the largest and most celebrated Special Olympics  events in Aroostook County.

Both Basketball Day and the Spring Games are long-standing traditions in the county. Over the  years, the Spring Games in particular have grown into a signature countywide event, bringing  together schools, volunteers, families and community partners to celebrate athletic achievement and the mission of Special Olympics.

“We look forward to these events every year,” said Carl Michaud, chair of the Area Management Team. “They highlight not only athletic accomplishments, but also the strong sense of community and inclusion that defines Special Olympics Aroostook.”
