FORT KENT, Maine — Fort Kent police have charged a 15-year-old Fort Kent Community High School student with making a bomb threat in a handwritten note last week.
The student was charged with making a false report and terrorizing, according to the Fort Kent Police Department. Both are Class C crimes for which the person could receive up to five years incarceration and a $5,000 fine.
Police are not disclosing the suspect’s name because the student is a juvenile.
Police received the call about the threat at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 24. School administrators said the note, found in a bathroom, said that there was a bomb at the school.
The high school was shut down for the rest of the day. Students and faculty were evacuated as the Fort Kent police, along with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police, responded to the call. The Maine State Police bomb team was also consulted in the immediate aftermath of the threat.
Law enforcement did not find any evidence of a bomb at the school.
Fort Kent Elementary School continued classes that day, but in a soft lockdown, meaning that nobody could enter or exit the building. The elementary school continued its day because the note apparently only named the high school.
The student was released to a parent Wednesday morning, police said.
