Special Olympics Maine Aroostook seeks new coach for Grasshoppers soccer team

Special Olympics Maine Aroostook County is seeking a new head coach for its Grasshoppers soccer team as longtime coach Carl Michaud steps down after years of dedicated leadership.

Michaud, the founding and only head coach of the Grasshoppers program since its inception in 2016, has stepped down. His departure marks a significant transition for the team and the broader Special Olympics community in Aroostook County. Over the years, Michaud has played a vital role in building the program from the ground up, recruiting athletes, organizing practices and games while creating an environment rooted in encouragement, inclusion and teamwork.

“Carl has been an extraordinary leader and advocate for our athletes,” said Martin Puckett, CEO at Central Aroostook Association and member of the Area Management Team. “His commitment has helped shape the Grasshoppers into more than just a soccer team, it’s a community where athletes feel supported, valued and empowered.”

Special Olympics Maine Aroostook is now accepting applications for a head coach or co-coaches to begin in July in preparation for the upcoming soccer season. The organization is looking for individuals who are passionate about sports and inclusion and who are committed to supporting athletes of all abilities. Prior coaching experience is welcomed but not required; resources and training are provided.

Michaud will not only be missed on the soccer field but also on the sidelines at various basketball events. Michaud has organized the county basketball round robin event for years, coached unified basketball at Presque Isle High School and assisted with the Snowdogs. Through sports like soccer, basketball, bowling and the spring games athletes gain physical fitness, build confidence, develop social skills, and experience the joy of participation in a supportive and inclusive environment. Michaud will be greatly missed at the spring games, as the chair of the Area Management Team his organization and leadership has been valuable. We wish Carl the best as he moves south to be near family.
