Police arrest Aroostook man who allegedly threatened people with a hammer

Madawaska police have arrested a man who was reported to be threatening his neighbors with a hammer.

Jacob Brewer, 46, of Madawaska was arrested Tuesday night on charges of criminal threatening, disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest, Police Chief Jamie Pelletier said in a release.

Police were called to 11th Avenue the night of June 23, where they found Brewer. He resisted officers’ attempts to take him into custody, Pelletier said.

Police used a Taser while attempting to arrest Brewer. He continued to resist, but officers safely restrained him, the chief said.

Because Brewer showed signs of severe mental illness at the time, he was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent for evaluation, Pelletier said. He was later released from the hospital and taken to the Aroostook County Jail, where he remains.

He faces a court appearance on Aug. 6.

Correction: An earlier version of the story incorrectly stated Brewer had been released on bail.
