Tough decisions to make

To the editor:

Our country is headed in the wrong direction. Politically. You only have to pay attention to the news, any media, to see how socialism is creeping into our political system. For some reason many of the younger generation seem to lack any creative desire to achieve success on their own. It seems they would be content living off the success of others. Not all of them, but enough to cause concern.

In future elections we are going to have some tough decisions to make. Somewhere along the line, as a nation, we better wake up and decide what we want our future to be.

I ended a letter to the St. John Valley Times, published March 27, 2019, with the following comment: “We have a new wave of demagogues waiting off the horizon, advocating government takeover to solve the problems created by the government, fueled with childish fantasies of a utopian society. Will we ever learn?”

It seems the demagogues are now slipping through the cracks in the Democratic Party. They call themselves democratic socialists. Small in numbers now, but their numbers are growing. Keep in mind, there is a thin line between socialism and communism and listen to what the socialists are spouting. The free this and the free that and “let the rich pay for it” may sound great now, but when the rich are gone, who pays?

Some of the new wave of political hopefuls are barely out of diapers with no life experience to speak of. They know only what they were taught in an educational system that has come under fire for its left-leaning bias.

I have nothing against education. I just think formal education should be tempered with life experience. I wish I was as smart as I thought I was at 25. Unfortunately, in time, this new breed of democratic socialists will be saying the same thing. I just hope their youthful exuberance, enhanced by their childish fantasies of a Utopian society, doesn’t destroy the foundation of our country.
