Ms. Washburn 2007
Six ‘lovely and talented’ seniors recently competed to earn the coveted award of Ms. Washburn. The contestants, introduced by Amber Palmer, included: “Lola, the Cable Girl” (Matt Connolly) was escorted by “Tater Salad” (Amy Reed); “Manuela” (Stephen Pesut), escorted by “Caio Bugwah” (Jackie Abar); “Marry Me” (Jonathan Silber) escorted by “Flash Grandmaster Post” (Jasmine Shaw); “Anita Booty” (Adam Thompson), escorted by “Igotta Rump” (Erica McDougall); and “Ima Shopper” (Troy Wilcox), escorted by “Bank Krupt” (Paige Huston).
Their opening number featured all five contestants performing to Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman.” The presentation was choreographed by Kelly and Erica Hemphill and the group was joined by a cameo appearance from Chris Hallett.
The master and mistress of ceremonies were Chris and Andrea Hallett, and the judges included Jaime Bell, Leland Caron, Laura Churchill and Darrell Molton, with Auditor Kelly Hemphill.
The contestants modeled their sportswear and gave the audience a brief biography of themselves including names, ages, height, along with hair and eye color.
Some special entertainment was provided by Erica Hemphill and Sarah McEachern who demonstrated their excellence in a clogging routing. Larry Jenkins also treated the crowd to some of his musical talents.
The contestants presented their talents with Manuela performing a dance routing, Marry Me sang “Mr. Sandman,” Lola the Cable Girl did a stand-up comedy routine, Anita Booty sang “I’m Too Sexy” and Ima Shopper performed a monologue.
During the Evening Gown Review, the contestants each answered a stage question, and the judges retired to make their official choices. During the intermission, door prizes and 50/50 drawings were done, along with a chance for Audience Choice ballots to be purchased.
Special awards for the evening included Best Hair and Best Dressed, both won by Jon Silber; the Best Legs award was taken by Steve Pesut; and Matt Connolly went home with the award for Best Talent. The contestants themselves voted on Ms. Congeniality and it was won hands down by Chris Hallett, with the prestigious Audience Choice Award going to Troy Wilcox. The first runner-up position was won by Adam Thompson. Congratulations go out to Troy Wilcox, the reigning 2007 Ms. Washburn.
During the closing, Amber Palmer passed out thank-you awards to the judges and those special individuals who contributed to the success of this program for the Class of 2007 Project Graduation.

There is Bingo each Tuesday evening at the Washburn Trail Runners Snowmobile clubhouse at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, April 27, the evening of Bingo will be in support of Project Graduation.
Washburn’s Paul Clayton and Friends play at the K of C building in Presque Isle on the second and last Saturday of each month. Their next scheduled session will be held on Saturday, April 14.
Brownie Girl Scouts from Troop 194 will meet at the Rec Center on Monday, April 23, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The Eatwell Nutrition Program will meet at the Washburn Rec Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the theme for April will include ‘Breakfast Basics.’
The town of Washburn will be accepting applications for a part-time clerk. Anyone wishing to apply may contact the town office in person or by phoning 455-8485 during regular business hours from 7 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Washburn Rotary will be holding their annual Rotary Auction on Saturday, April 28, at the high school. The supper starts at 5 p.m. with the auction to follow. Their menu this year includes turkey and roast beef, along with side dishes and appetizers. Tickets are available from any Rotarian or at the door.
Municipal Award
Washburn’s town clerk, Beverly , has recently been recognized for her many accomplishments and day-to-day dedication and effectiveness. She has been awarded the in T.O.W. designation for the month of March.
Bev’s dedication and resiliency even in the toughest times to public service and her commitment to the quality of life in Washburn is an extraordinary example of the sense of duty of our town employees. She represents the best Washburn has to offer.
She has taken on a wide array of responsibilities, using her leadership and management skills to improve the community’s productivity, efficiency and performance. Bev has maintained unusually high levels of excellence throughout her career. Often working away from the limelight, she exemplifies the very spirit of public service.
She has made concrete, measurable and important contributions to the quality of life in Washburn that deserves our praise, respect and admiration. With her unswerving dedication to excellence, she enriches the lives of all Washburn’s citizens. Special congratulations and a sincere thank you goes out to Bev from all who know her.

‘Weather’ was the theme for March’s Story Time. The regular ‘opening’ screams were followed by “Miss Cindy” Richendollar who read the book “Sail Away” by Donald Crews; and Maria Flood read “Stormy Weather” by Molly Wigand.
Mike Fitzsimmons, a weather specialist, gave a wonderful presentation on weather safety and gave each child a 3-D weather cartoon complete with viewing glasses.
Punch and oatmeal crème pies were served and door prize winners included Mykayla Espling, Adriana Arribas, Courtney Cannon, Tal McCoy, Brooklyn Tupper, Mariah Davis, Lucia Bragg, Samantha Churchill, Dawson McCoy, Kylie Haines, Taylor Arruda, Savanna Theriault, Valerie Flood, Rebecca Savoy, Scott Flood, Mikayla Churchill, Nick Doody, Beckam Vaughn, Victoria Savoy, Makenzie Vaughn and Brook Arruda.
The next scheduled Story Time at the library will be held on Wednesday, April 18 and the theme will be ‘National Library Week.’
On Monday, March 26, the library sponsored the middle school book discussion group, and the book of the month was “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” by Jules Vernon. After some lively discussions, the students enjoyed a supper of pizza, popcorn and punch. Participants included Desiraie Rediker, Kala Farley, Lindsey Blackstone, Kolby Koch, Darby Koch, Courtney Cannon, Taylor Arruda, Kyle Huston, Tanya Tarbox, Marlaina Spooner and Cameron Huston. The next meeting of the group will be held on Thursday, April 19, at the library and the book for discussion will be “Eragon” by Christopher Paolini.
The Women, Work and Community Group will meet at the library on Wednesday, April 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. All area women are invited to attend.
The Washburn Memorial Library Board of Trustees will hold their next monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at the library.
The Washburn Memorial Library will be starting several new groups after school to be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The first half hour will be homework time or the students may read a book of their choice. The rest of the program will feature a variety of events ranging from arts and crafts, cooking, games and much more.
Rec Center schedule
On Wednesday, April 11, there will be arts and crafts at the Rec Center for grades 1-4 from 2:45 to 4 p.m.
On Thursday, April 12, there will be scrapbooking at the Rec Center from 6 to 9 p.m.
On Friday, April 13, at 6 p.m. there will be an awards ceremony held at the elementary school for grades 5-6 girls’ and boys’ basketball teams.
On Monday, April 16, there will be men’s basketball from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the elementary school gym.
The April/spring school vacation week will be from Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20. Programs for the youth include the following: On Tuesday, April 17, there will be movies at the Caribou Cinemas for grades K-8 from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m. On Wednesday, April 18, there will be a field trip to Presque Isle McDonald’s and bowling to follow. This is for grades 4 – 6 and limited to the first 14 who sign up. On Thursday, April 19, there will be a trip to the Presque Isle indoor pool for grades 4 to6 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and is limited to the first 14 signing up. On Friday, April 20, there will be rollerskating from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Melody Roller Rink in Caribou for grades K – 8.
Junior Exhibition
An enjoyable evening was held at Washburn High School on Wednesday, April 4. The audience was welcomed by Kelsee McLaughlin, Junior Class president; and Erica McDougall and Jensen Reed serving as master and mistress of ceremonies. Junior Exhibition director was Londa Brown and judges for the event were Tammy DeLong, Donna Chasse and Gail Hagelstein. David Roy and Jensen Reed provided the musical entertainment for the event.
Kelly O’Donnell won the People’s Choice Award for her rendition of “Ten simple rules for dating my daughter” by Bruce Cameron. The Runner up was Kristen Goupille for her performance of “Dead at Seventeen” by John Berrio in “Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul.”
David Roy wowed the crowd with his recitation of “Sam McGee” and took home the first place award for 2007.
