The two Washburn Destination Imagination teams recently returned from their trip to Knoxville, Tenn., where they had traveled to participate in the Global Destination Imagination competitions.
They knew they would not be able to place in the competition due to not having all of the original cast, but decided to go, and the team was recognized and commended for their “perseverance and team spirit” and were presented with the special ”Spirit of DI” Award for continuing on after a bus accident left the students and chaperones scrambling to make arrangements for alternate transportation shortly after they’d left their home town of Washburn. A few students, shaken by the event, had opted to not continue the journey and stayed in the County.
The teams had a wonderful time meeting other students from all over the world. They also wish to thank those who supported their various fund-raising efforts and those who helped at the accident site. These special kindnesses will not be forgotten by the teams, their teachers, advisors, and their families and friends.
The SAD 45 District Budget Meeting will be held Wednesday, June 17, at 7 p.m. in the David J. Lyon Washburn District Elementary School gymnasium.
The SAD 45 District Budget Validation Referendum will be held June 22. The polls will be open at 9 a.m. and closed at 6 p.m. at the following locations: Perham Town Office, 206 High Meadow Road, Perham; Dunntown Advent Church, Wade; and Washburn Civic Center, 1287 Main St., Washburn.

The Salmon Brook Historical Society quarterly meeting and potluck supper will be held at the Civic Center on Thursday, June 24. The Washburn Rotary Club will be sponsoring a truck pull at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 3. The pull is sanctioned by Maine State Truck and Tractor Pullers Association and will take place rain or shine. Registration begins at 4 p.m., with the pulls starting at 6 p.m. All proceeds will go to benefit Washburn Rotary projects. For further information contact Rotarian Peggy Bugbee at 754-8424.

Dutch Soccer Camp is ongoing in town and is held at the elementary school fields from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The lessons are held on Wednesday, June 16, through Friday, June 18.
Beaver Basketball Camp is also in full swing, taking place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, and Thursday, June 17, at the elementary school fields.
The Washburn Rec Center summer programs begin on Monday, June 21, and include K-2 basketball from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.; grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 take to the fields from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Also on Monday, June 21, there will be swimming lessons at the Presque Isle pool from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 22, there will be K-2 soccer from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 practice from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be cooking classes at the Rec Center. Grades 5-8 go from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 2-4 mix up treats from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Life Scout Taylor Skinner has completed his Eagle Scout project which was the beautification at the cemetery and he was recognized on Memorial Day at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Caribou.
Taylor planned his project out and was in charge of fund-raising efforts in order to be able to purchase the items he needed to complete his project. He was also in charge of organizing and carrying out the project itself.
He had many family members, friends and troop members help him complete this project and in total, it took 164.5 hours for planning, fund-raising and the implementation of the actual project.
Taylor had a new garden put in which consisted of rose bushes, cedar shrubs and perennials, and nine maple trees were planted. Also adding to the peaceful ambiance of the cemetery grounds, Taylor donated a granite bench which is engraved with the words “All Gave Some… Some Gave All…” The Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery Association presented a certificate of appreciation to Taylor for all the work he has done at the cemetery.
Members of Washburn’s senior citizen program through the Rec Center made a trip to Easton to join the Rec Center seniors there for lunch. Due to the rainy weather, the planned barbecue was replaced with a delicious buffet, complete with large cheese and ham rolls, macaroni, potato and fruit salads, along with chips, pickles and fresh fruits. The ladies also enjoyed brownie a la modes for dessert, along with coffee and punch.

WDHS has a new “Snack Shack.” The 8- by 20-foot building was constructed by the two shop classes at the high school under the instruction of teacher Don Hanson. The building is also painted Washburn’s blue and gold and will be used as a mobile concession stand during some of the various sports activities.
Wade Thurston is known at the high school for his volunteer spirit both in the automotive and electrical areas. He got donations of lumber for the floors and wall from the S. W. Collins Company and Huber donated the sheathing. Thurston donated his time, the electrical panel, outlets, switches and Romex wiring for the new building.
