CARIBOU, Maine — Just two months after he earned two national fire officer certifications from Texas A&M University, the Maine Fire Chiefs Association presented Caribou Fire and Ambulance Chief Scott Susi with the Fire Chief of the Year award.
Caribou city councilors congratulated and applauded Susi’s achievement during an Oct. 10 meeting, which was held despite a major power outage in the area. As councilors used cell phones to shed some light, City Manager Dennis Marker presented Mayor Gary Aiken with a plaque given to the city for Susi’s award.
The plaque will be hung in the Caribou Municipal Building at 25 High Street to showcase Susi’s work for the city.
Susi had no idea he was going to receive the award when he attended an Oct. 4 meeting with the Maine Fire Service Institute. When his name was called, Susi said he turned around and saw members of his family along with Caribou city officials applauding him.
“I didn’t even know they were going to be there,” Susi said. “They were all in it for about three weeks.”
Susi said he was “very, very humbled” by the award, and “blown away” by the surprise appearance of his family members and colleagues.
The mayor said Susi’s achievement was ”just another example of the great effort put forth by the employees here at the city of Caribou. We all appreciate what they do for us.”
