More than 100 boys and girls from Aroostook County traveled to Bangor and battled extremely warm conditions on July 6 to compete in the state finals of the Hershey Track and Field Program.
When the dust settled, the Aroostook delegation captured 119 of the 247 place finishes for nearly 50% of all the awards. Also youngsters from the region collected 62 first and second place finishes out of a possible 84.
The program, sponsored by the Hershey Food Corporation and Maine Recreation and Park Association, has been a national and now North American event for the past 33 years.
Northern Regional Representative Kathy Mazzuchelli from the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department notes that over the years a large contingent of youth from Aroostook County have had the opportunity to attend the National Finals. She adds that the results from this year’s state meet looked good for another contingent of youngsters from northern Maine to head to Hershey, Pa.
Molly Anthony of Bridgewater, a national finalist in 2009 and 2010, captured a triple crown in the 13-14 girls division with three first place finishes at the state meet, winning the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the long jump.
Jacob O’Berry of Presque Isle also captured a triple crown with first place finishes in the 200-meter dash, 800-meter dash and the standing long jump.
