Ultimate Frisbee returns to Shiretown

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Ultimate Summer League (HUSL) returned for its sixth season with four teams competing throughout the summer.

The annual summer league is organized and presented by a joint effort between the local club “Ultimate Houlton” and the state organization, Maine Ultimate.

This year’s league welcomes back three previous sponsors from past seasons — F.A. Peabody Company, WHOU 100.1 FM, and Bond Family Roofing (formerly Bond Family Mercantile), alongside newcomer Carmichael Masonry.

The league games are played weekly on Tuesday nights at the Maliseet recreational field on the Bell Road in Littleton with the first games starting June 19 and continuing through to July 24. The postseason championship tournament is scheduled for Sunday, July 29, at Houlton’s community park with the championship game slated for 7:30 p.m. under the lights.

A recap of the week one scores is as follows.

WHOU 11, Bond 5 — Halfway through the first half, this matchup had all the makings of a great game, but the steam started to run out for Bond. After tying the game 2-2  WHOU ran the rest of the half and go into halftime up 6-2. Life came back to Bond in the second half, but was too little too late.

A balanced attack by Noah Holmes’ roster of mixed experience and athleticism was too much to overcome.

FAPCO 11, Mason 7 — Joel Bond’s FAPCO roster features some young, fast, and talented players. The group started the game looking to end it quickly and not look back and that’s exactly what they did in for the first half.  FAPCO scored the first six points of the game to lead 6-0 at the break. Mason took halftime to reflect and make adjustments and it seemed to work. They were able to put up seven points in the second half and actually outscore FAPCO 7-5, however, the five scored by FAPCO was enough to reach the 11 point cap and win the game in their favor.
