Border Patrol agent briefs Rotary

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, July 31, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.

The guest speaker was Seth Prince, a Border Patrol agent at the Fort Fairfield station.  He spoke about the areas that the Border Patrol is responsible for — the areas between border ports of entry.  They work to detect illegal aliens inside the U.S. Their area typically covers 25 miles inside the U.S. border, but they can go up to 100 miles.  Agents can investigate vehicles, but not dwellings.

They work in partnership with other federal, state and local agents as well as community leadership, farmers, landowners and logging operations.

Prince noted that marijuana is still illegal at the federal level and any product found during an investigation will be seized.

The Border Patrol has many specialty units including ATV, snowmobile, horse, helicopters, boats, K-9 and more.

Anyone seeing any suspicious activity should contact the Fort Fairfield station at 476-5100 or the Houlton station at 532-6521.
